Catalytic Activity of Metal Chloride Supported Bentonites in Acetylation of Alcohols

چکیده

Tightening legislation on the emission of hazardous pollutants is driving chemical industries towards the implementation of innovative “clean technology” including the use of alternative heterogeneously catalyzed processes. This prompted us to examine the catalytic potential of Indian clays for fine chemical synthesis. Catalytic activity of clay minerals from India was only less studied. In the present work, catalytic activity of metal salt supported bentonites in the acetylation of alcohol was studied in detail. Catalysts were prepared from the purified bentonite by acid modification followed by metal chloride supporting. The catalysts were characterized by measuring, acidity and cation exchange capacity. Catalytic activity was tested using the liquid phase acetylation reaction of alcohols using acetic acid. Correlation between surface properties and activity was examined.
